Letter of Appeal

The Masjidul Jamiah Mosque, also called the Malay Military Mosque was established in 1864 – 160 Years old, following the disbandment of the Malay Regiment of the British Army at that time. Since then, this Mosque has served the religious and spiritual needs of the Muslim community living in an around the Java Lane area of Slave Island.

With the development of Slave Island, the UDA under the government’s Development Programe built the “METRO HOME RESIDENCIES” – 3 High Rise Flats consisting of 624 Housing Units and 114 Commercial Units. 250 Muslim families were provided with housing. With the increased number of resident Muslim families in the area, as well as Muslims working in shops and mercantile establishments and close  proximity to the presence of the Police and Armed forces in the area, it was imperative that we had to seriously expand the facilities in the Mosque to accommodate the increased number of brethren. Our intentions were in additional praying area for the increasing Jamath for Congregational prayers, Janaza Section for the benefit the flat dwellers, Library, Information Center for Muslims and non-Muslims and “MASJIDUL JAMIAH TO BE AN ATTRACTION TO LOCAL AND FOREIGN VISITORS”.

The UDA has approved our plan for ground + two floors also have obtained the approval from WAKF BOARD and based on their instructions and guidance have established the “MASJIDUL JAMIAH DEVELOPMENT FUND” consisting of the following Officials:

  • President Mr. T. F. Iyne
  • Vice President Al Haj M. Kamil Raban
  • Sheikh Arkam Noorthamith
  • Al Haj Afzal Marikar – Representative of Sheikh Arkam Nooramith
  • Haroon Cassiere – Working Committee Member
  • Representative of the Architect Firm – We Architects Collaborative, to ensure that the construction is as per the approved UDA PLAN
  • A representative from the Auditors – M/S CCS ASSOCIATES/ CHARTED ACCOUNTANTS – for monthly monitoring / auditing of all funds transactions of Re-Development project.

     

We now look forward, and make a humble appeal for your kind generosity to commence construction of our Masjid.

The Prophet  said, “Whoever builds for Allah a mosque, seeking by it Allah’s grace, Allah will build for him a house in paradise.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Architectural Design

A historic day in the annals of the Masjidul Jamiah Java Lane. The foundation stone laying ceremony, a joyous and happy occasion, for the development of the Mosque took place on this day in the presence of a large gathering of Brothers and Sisters including well-wishers from other faiths and religions. The President in his address gave a brief history of the of the Masjid which came into being in 1864 during British Rule and was also called the Malay Military Mosque, as well as the Rupee Fund Mosque. The Masjid served the needs of the community for the past 150 years, but with the increase in numbers of the congregation there is an urgent need for significant expansion.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam, Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmathullahi Wa Barakthuhu. We appeal to you for your magnanimous and generous support to build this new Masjid and give herewith the breakdown of the estimated costs for the development of the Masjid. Should you require any further information or clarification:

Masjidul Jamiah Re-development Cost

(1) Cost breakdown for the various stages of construction:

  • FLOOR COST
  • Ground Floor + foundation LKR 80 Mil
  • 1st Floor LKR 40 Mil
  • 2nd Floor Including Concrete Roof Top LKR 50 Mil
  • Total Estimated Cost LKR 170 Mil

(2) Cost Breakdown for Air-conditioning and Solar Power

  • Air-conditioning LKR 15 Million
  • Solar Power System LKR 35 Million
  • Total Estimated Cost LKR 170 Mil
  • Total Estimated Cost LKR 220 Mil

Cost Estimate

  • Total Approximate floor area 7.728 Sq.Ft
  • Approximate Cost per Sq. Ft. LKR 25,000.00

(Including cost for preserving Archeological Features)
Four Donors @ LKR 6,250 can contribute for a sq. ft.

  • Approximate Cost per Musalla LKR 180,000

(2Ft X 3.5Ft) = 7Sq.Ft
Five or more Donors together can contribute per Musallah
